Shadow of the Betrayer: Loremaster guide for Shadowmoon Valley

Updated for World of Warcraft Battle for Azeroth 8.0.1

*

This guide will help you get started working on your Shadow of the Betrayer achievement. Make sure you first check the WoW Loremaster Calculator to see if you have already started making progress on quests in Shadowmoon Valley.

Shadowmoon Valley is one of the two “end-game” zones that launched in The Burning Crusade expansion. Many of the final quests, particularly in the The Cipher of Damnation storyline, are tuned for a group of level 70 characters. Make sure you have friends if you are trying to complete these quests while leveling.

Getting to Shadowmoon Valley

Shadowmoon Valley is located south east of Shattrath City. You can just run/fly there whenever you like but you will need to be at least level 67 in order to pick up the starting quests.

Pain Points

*

These quests have generated the most questions, comments, and general frustration on the forums. Karabor Training Grounds (Wowhead | WoW DB) This quest starts off the “Borrowed Power” storyline. In order to pick up this quest you must first ally yourself with either the Aldors or the Scryers. If you never played during TBC this probably means nothing to you. In The Burning Crusade expansion there were two factions that shared control over Shattrath City: the Aldors and the Scryers. Each faction had some of their own quest content and their own reputation rewards. If you are coming back to Shattrath on a high level character you need to pick up the quest Haggard War Veteran (Wowhead | WoW DB) in Shattrath City in order to start a small quest chain that end with you choosing a faction to represent. Battle of the Crimson Watch (Wowhead | WoW DB) If you are attempting this quest with appropriately-leveled characters, you will want to bring the recommended 5 players. I suspect if you have a tank/healer/dps trio you can 3 man it, but it will still be tough. This quest is also popular with achievement hunters, since upon completion of the quest you will be awarded with two tabards. During TBC you used to be awarded a chest with a chance to loot either a green or purple tabard, but at some point they changed it to just giving players both. Divination: Gorefiend”s Truncheon (Wowhead | WoW DB) This quest required to you fly around the zone looking for a patrolling mobs the Ghostriders of Karabor. What the quest fails to make clear is that you need to wear the Spectrecles headpiece in order for the mobs to be visible. If you lost yours you can buy new ones from NPCs in Wildhammer Stronghold (Alliance) or Shadowmoon Villiage (Horde). Zuluhed the Whacked (Wowhead | WoW DB) This is another quest that is quite possibly over tuned for a group of appropriately-leveled characters. This quest is not strictly required for the Shadow of the Betrayer achievement. A requirement to pick up the final quest in the Netherwing Ledge storyline is to have neutral rep with the Netherwing faction, and this quest does award a healthy chunk of reputation. The Cipher of Damnation (Wowhead | WoW DB) This is easily the longest storyline in the Loremaster of Outland meta achievement. The final parts of the quest were intended to be completed by level 70 characters working on their end game attunements. Since the Legion 7.3.5 quest zone overhaul I can”t say how the tuning of these quests were impacted by level scaling, but I expect them to be quite difficult. This final quest in the storyline has some pretty sweet weapon models as quest rewards. They were unique models for the longest time, but in all the years since this quest was introduced they may have been reused at some point.
