Moss blocks naturally generate on the floor and ceiling within the lush caves biome. However, the biome does not generate in default worlds yet, and can only be accessed in a single biome world.

Using bone meal on a moss block causes nearby dirt, sand, gravel, stone, deepslate, tuff, granite, andesite, and diorite to be converted to moss blocks. Blocks on the same Y level with an air block above them, within a random 3×3 to 7×7 area from the original moss block can be converted.

Breaking < edit>

Moss blocks can be mined using any tool or by hand, but a hoe or axe is the fastest way to break it.

↑ Times are for unenchanted tools as wielded by players with no status effects, measured in seconds. For more information, see Breaking § Speed.

Trading < edit>

Wandering traders can sell 2 moss blocks for 1 emerald.

Behavior < edit>

Plants such as grass and flowers can be planted on top of moss blocks. While saplings can also be planted on moss blocks, they will never grow into trees no matter how much bone meal is used on the plant or how many ticks pass, allowing the sapling to remain as it is indefinitely. Sugar cane and bamboo cannot be placed on moss blocks.

Using bone meal on moss blocks causes grass, moss carpets, azaleas, and flowering azaleas to grow.

Piston interactivity < edit>

When a piston pushes a moss block, it drops as an item.
