growing grass underground

hi i have a secret base so that ppl cant grief. I was wondering how to grow grass underground cuz i wanted to make an area where animals might spawn and where i can plant trees and stuff.

I know that ppl say that ” you hav to make a staircase from the surface to ur base” or ” use silk touch”, but i dont have silk touch and i cant build a staircase cuz its supposed to be SECRET.

So basically, my question is: Is there other ways to grow grass underground????????
Light it up!
I think that light in the room that your trying growing
Torches should do the trick

EDIT
sorry
info is outdated

just do stairwell and when it starts getting down more and more you can just seal it up, make sure its very well lit, or get silk touch, only way
You don”t have to break the surface. If you expose the side of a dirt block with grass on it, you can cause it to connect to another one next to/below it. So you could build a tunnel to *almost* the surface.
Just an FYI. It is highly unlikely any animals will spawn down there. You would need to lure some in.

This is probably your best option. Make a vertical setup like this:

(surface)

Basically grass can spread to dirt blocks that are three blocks below them as long as there is sufficient light (light 9+).

To make it spread fairly quickly I recommend making it 4X4. As the grass grows downward you can fill in the upper levels above to help avoid accidental discovery if you like. Probably have a ladder shaft next to this so you can climb up and fill it in.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Passive mobs only spawn on the highest Y-level block in that Y column. Even if you got grass underground, animals wouldn”t spawn on it. You need to lure some down with wheat and then breed them.

Rodabon”s method is the fastest way to spread grass downward. Even if animals can”t spawn underground on grass, I”d still recommend getting grass down there. Grass makes a very nice floor for underground bases.

That is another viable option and would probably get faster results, but pushing the block initially on the surface could be observed and draw attention.

Yeah, but that”s why I would do it, when no one, or barely anyone was on. Then when your done, just get rid of the piston.
Let’s play good guys against bad guys… Yes. Let’s play that. Are you ready? You’re the bad guy. And when you’re bad, you just run. That’s fine right? Well… Shall we play?
