Hello everyone, and merry Chri- I mean happy Halloween! ‘Tis the season to spread fear and anguish! With that, festivities which strike dread into your house guests is of the utmost importance. Basically, I’ll be informing you all on how to carve pumpkins in Minecraft to make some scary faces! OooOooOoooh! This’ll be fairly quick, so let’s get started!
Obtaining a Pumpkin
Pumpkins are not craftable items, and are a fruit block that typically generate on grassy terrain in the Overworld. They usually spawn in patches, hence the name of ‘Pumpkin Patches.’ It is quite common to find Pumpkin seeds as loot, which can then be planted to grow a Pumpkin. To make Pumpkin seeds, you’ll need to place a Pumpkin in a crafting table, just like Melon slices. You can also find Carved Pumpkins naturally, but this is the only way to carve a normal Pumpkin.

Time to carve!
To carve a Pumpkin, all you have to do is right-click the Pumpkin placed on the ground with Shears. This is very similar to how you strip logs with an Axe.That’s all! Now, your Pumpkin will have some eerie eyes, along with crooked teeth! This is mostly decorational, but we’ll go over the actual uses a Carved Pumpkin has.
Carved Pumpkins can be worn on the head as a helmet, and although they offer limited visibility, Enderman will not attack you if you look at them with a Pumpkin on. This is moderately useful at best, straight up annoying at worst.
Carved Pumpkins are necessary for the creation of Iron and Snow Golems. Both will protect you from mobs, but one is better than the other at his job. Iron Golems can spawn naturally, but the ones you create won’t attack you even when provoked. Snow Golems do not naturally spawn, and can be used as a source for infinite snow as they leave a trail of snow wherever they walk.
Jack o’ Lantern
The Jack o’ Lantern is a craftable and discoverable variant of the Pumpkin which can be used as a light source like a torch. All you need to craft it is one torch, and one Carved Pumpkin. You cannot wear a Jack o’ Lantern. It’s actually a pretty decent light source, considering it can be placed on ceilings and underwater like Glowstone.

A prank and a half
One of the best uses that I’ve discovered for the Carved Pumpkin is to prank your friends. And by prank, I mean make their life a living Nether. First, you’ll need to enchant a Carved Pumpkin with Curse of Binding. Next, a standard dispenser trap hooked up to a pressure plate or tripwire. I think you know where I’m going with this. The totally inconspicuous dispensers will bind the Carved Pumpkin to his character for life! (extra effective on a hardcore mode server)
Wait, Pumpkins are a real thing?
Ok everyone, this section is gonna be a little weird but the gist of it is that I’m going to be teaching you how to make a Minecraft Pumpkin in real life. Yeah, that’s right. If you’re a youngster you should probably go grab your parent and make them help you, but for now, let’s get started. What you will need– A Pumpkin (Duh! You can get one at a large retailer like Walmart, or even local markets)– The Minecraft Pumpkin Template (it’s right above!)– A clean-ish place to work– A pencil/pen– A large-ish knife– A spoon– A small candle or light (will be in the Pumpkin)
Carving your real-life Pumpkin
Step 1: Using a pencil/pen, mark where you’re going to slice the top of the pumpkin off.
Step 2: While securely holding the pumpkin, slice the top off where you marked with a knife.
Step 3: With a smaller knife (or the same one from before) cut a circle around the top to gain entry into the pumpkin.
Step 4: Use a spoon to scoop out the top of the pumpkin, revealing all the seeds.
Step 5: Use the same spoon to scrape all the seeds and junk out to hollow out the pumpkin. (don’t be afraid to use your hands!)
Step 6: Once the pumpkin is hollow, if the flesh is still thick, scrape down the side you plan on carving.
Step 7: Using the provided template, trace out the lines where you will carve out the shapes.
Step 8: When carving, using a rocking motion works best, and an ‘up and down’ motion when you can’t. Please keep your fingers out of the way!
Step 9: Place your candles/lights inside the pumpkin, then place the top you cut off back on.
Step 10: Profit!!!
With your newfound/rejuvenated knowledge on all things Pumpkins, you should be able to enjoy a fairly niche mechanic in Minecraft. Pumpkins have been around for a while, but they haven’t changed much since their addition. Now that we got the goods to make our builds festive and conjure golems, I think I’ll take my leave. To all of you, have a great day!
