Spawning < edit>
In Java Edition two to four squid can spawn in water, as long as the biome is a river or ocean biome variant from Y-level 46 to 63. In Bedrock Edition two to four squid can spawn in ocean biomes, and two squid can spawn in river biomes, at any Y-level; and squid have a 5% chance to spawn as babies. In addition, squid spawn only on the surface, i.e. there must not be a solid or spawnable block above the spawn location.
Drops < edit>
Ink Sac s 1–3. The maximum amount is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 1–6 with Looting III. 1–3 Experience when killed by a player or tamed wolf Killing a baby squid yields no items and no experience.

Squid are passive toward the player. They are not attracted to light and do not deliberately interact with the player.
When a squid moves, its tentacles open and close, giving it an appearance of pushing itself leisurely forward. A squid hovers in place when first spawned into the world and wanders around aimlessly in three dimensions.
Squid suffocate when out of water, dying after 300 game ticks (15 seconds). While on land, they remain stationary until they suffocate. They can take fall damage and burn like any other land mob, but they cannot drown. When out of the water, squid are extremely resistant to knockback.
Squid cannot swim in lava, even if given a Fire Resistance effect. They simply pass through the lava and behave as if on land.
Unlike land-based mobs, squid can swim against a current and not get pushed by it.
Guardians and elder guardians attack squid in the same manner as they would do to a player, even if the squid is affected by invisibility.
Squid are affected by the Impaling enchantment — In Java Edition because they are aquatic mobs, and In Bedrock Edition as long as they touch water.
Squid produce a cloud of black ink particles and swim away when attacked. They also produce unique dark blue bubble particles when hit.
Squid sometimes beach themselves and suffocate on the banks of rivers and occasionally on ocean beaches.
Squid are attacked by axolotls.
Although squid have a baby variant in Bedrock Edition, there is currently no way to breed them.
If the player is in spectator mode or is far away from the squid,

History < edit>
Java Edition Beta 3 January 2011Notch mentions adding a new aquatic mob in a near future update. 1.2
Added squid. 1.2_01Squid can be milked with an empty bucket, just like cows. 1.3Squid now have the ability to move in three dimensions (rather than only along the bottom of the body of water). 1.4Squid can no longer be milked. 1.5Squid are now incapable of swimming upward. When they do manage to swim upward, they drift down with a zero net gain in altitude, resulting in a jittery animation. 1.7Until Beta 1.7, squid would not de-spawn like other mobs. This made squid a popular pet as once harvested they could be put in aquariums and kept there. However, this has been corrected because of their downward movement (at the time) caused them to pool in relatively deep crevices in the ocean or lakes, thus making ink sacs hard to acquire as further squid would not spawn until the local population had been lowered. Squid have been made to de-spawn like other mobs, likely in preparation for the much deeper oceans in the Release 1.8 update. 1.8Pre-release 2 ;)Squid now drop experience orbs when killed by the player. Java Edition 1.0.0Beta 1.9 Prerelease 5Squid now spawn only between layers 45 and 63. 1.4.4preSquid now suffocate when exposed to air. 1.814w06aSquid have been updated with a new AI system. Trivia < edit>
Hitting a squid underwater causes them to rise approximately 1⁄3–1⁄2 block. Squid cannot be damaged by attacking their arms. Squid don”t have a death animation. Squid and glow squid are the only mollusks in wtbblue.com. Squid behave like some land mobs and attempt to ride a minecart. Squid were the first passive mob to spawn at any light level, in water, and without grass. The squid”s idle sound is barely audible. If a squid is out of the water, its arms swing more slowly as its oxygen meter goes down. When 15 seconds have passed, its arms stop swinging and the squid begins to suffocate.
